With just two hours left on the clock, he was getting ready to start his weekend.
That's when his coworker — a 23-year-old Hispanic man from West Virginia whose name has not been released — came inside and shot Wallace and three other employees.
Wallace, 30, Mark Alan Frey, 50, Charles Edward Minnick, Jr., 31, are dead, while Brandon Chase Michael, 42, remains critical.
"This is not how this was supposed to end," reads a GoFundMe campaign launched in Wallace's memory.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Columbia Machine Inc. on Bikle Road in Smithsburg at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, where there was an active shooter.
Upon arrival, members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office found Michael outside of the building with a gunshot wound.
As deputies arrived to the scene, three victims, all dead, were located inside the business. The weapon used at both scenes was a semi-automatic handgun, officials said. The exact caliber, make, and model were not released by investigators.
During the incident, the gunman attempted to flee from police, though he was eventually involved in a firefight with a state police trooper, with both suffering gunshot wounds.
The shooter remains in law enforcement custody at the Meritus Medical Center. His name will be released when charges are filed. The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital after being treated.
Thursday's shooting came a day after a 21-year-old Hagerstown resident was arrested for a similar incident outside the Valley Mall in Washington County.
The motive for the Columbia Machine Inc. shooting is still under investigation.
